Reflections is honored to present Italian composer Caterina Barbieri for a night of spellbinding sonic intensity at this historic cathedral. She’ll open portals of sound and light via her modular synth and celestial lighting design.
“Music is a way for me to channel energy and cultivate the cosmic vastness of the inner world,” says Barbieri. She’s joined by opener Jill Fraser on a mesmerizing live electronic set, with immersive visuals by Berlin-based designer MFO.

Caterina Barbieri

CATERINA BARBIERI uses vivid modular synthesis to explore how sound can induce both metaphysical and psycho-physical responses in the listener.

Her full-length debut album Patterns of Consciousness (Important Records, 2017) was named one of the best releases of the year and the decade (Resident Advisor, Noisey, Fact Mag, The Wire). Her 2019 release on Editions Mego, Ecstatic Computation, has been critically acclaimed and is record of the year on Bleep.

Her music is rooted in the relationship between technology and its impact on the creative process, and her use of modular synthesizers doesn't simply aestheticize the machinery, it examines its consequences on human perception and the psychedelic potential of complex generative sequencing techniques. Pitchfork has described her music as “a mind-altering journey” and “a dreammachine for the ears.”

Barbieri holds a Master’s degree in classical guitar and a Bachelor’s degree in electroacoustic composition from the Conservatory of Bologna, Italy, alongside a Bachelor’s degree from the Faculty of Humanities and Philosophy of Bologna with a thesis in Ethnomusicology about Hindustani music and minimalism.

Jill Fraser

Los Angeles-based Jill Fraser is a composer and unsung pioneer of electronic music whose career encompasses over 40 years of work making music for films, commercials, and games.

In the 1980s she brought her Serge modular system to Hollywood, collaborating with composer Jack Nitzsche on soundtracks for Personal Best and Cruising, and with John Boorman on Zardoz. Jill was part of the vibrant Los Angeles punk and spoken word scene in the 80s as well, opening for acts like The Minutemen and Henry Rollins and touring with singer Buffy Sainte Marie.

Her new LP of solo electronic compositions, Earthly Pleasures, will be released in September 2024 on Drag City.
